Indian sports finance expert talks about his experience on working with Cristiano Ronaldo and his agent Jorge Mendes

The biggest football clubs, the most elite of them, are now purchasing shareholding stakes in several other clubs around the globe. Besides, they are also investing in projects and player-development programs. And now, Indian sports finance expert Rahul Mehta gave an exclusive interview to ‘Goal’ where he talked about all those deals and also talked about his experience in this field.

Rahul Mehta already worked with several big names of global football. He initiated negotiations for stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho. Besides, he has a strong connection with Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes. He recently revealed that the elite clubs are now working to expand their fanbases further.

Rahul Mehta told Goal “We created a sports company called Obsidian Sports Management which fully formed 18 months ago.” He added “It was a coming together of ex-professional footballers, one of them being former Middlesbrough and Aston Villa player George Boateng. We have another partner Kaldip Sunner who has been a registered agent for the past 10 or 12 years. He actually helped discover Falcao many years ago but, unfortunately, at that time nobody thought he’d be that great!”

He said “We’re doing a lot in South America – and now we’re doing consultancy taking clubs into the Africa and India regions. We are doing sponsorship for clubs, players not just in football – in other sports like Formula 1 and Formula E as well.” And then further added “We’re being approached quite often now by clubs who want to buy stakes in other clubs across Europe or even in Africa and India to have them as feeder clubs to develop players, and hopefully sell them on for profit or to come in the club one day.”

The sports finance expert then said “We get a lot of enquiries wanting to go into India for instance, because they’re seeing there’s a middle class there with disposable income. They can entice fans to support their club, buy their merchandise, follow them on the TV and hopefully buy tickets to the matches one day. Hopefully, by doing things like that we’ll eventually see more Asian and Indian footballers play in the Premier League.”

He said “I first met Jorge two years ago to discuss a club takeover,” and then further added “After we had finished he said to me ‘I like you, we can do a lot of things together’. We kept in touch and because of that we’ve worked on a number of sponsorship deals for a number of his players, notably Cristiano Ronaldo, but we’ve done things for David de Gea, Falcao and Bernardo Silva.”
